I live on 180 acres. My Border Collie is crate trained. It was invaluable at night for potty training. Having a crate trained dog is a great “just in case”….when we go to agility trials, in case of illness or injury and must have restriction of movement, if we must stay in a motel room, if we are stating at families’ houses overnight…even in case of a stay at a vet.

No, I do not agree crate training is stupid. My dog is rarely in a crate, a few times a year, bt for those times it is a relief to know she can comfortably deal with it.

However…..a dog is not meant to live in a crate by all means. I do agree with you that too many people resort to crates as an alternative to actually training and dealing with a dog. I feel the same about halties and harnesses.

I understand both sides to crate train and not. I have 3 dogs and none are crate trained. Do what is best for you and yours.

I don’t agree with you at all! Crate training keeps them safe and it also makes it much easier to housebreak.

Lazy people are the ones that keep their dogs outside so they don’t have to train them.

Dogs are den animals and if crate training is done right, they will use their crate as a den.

I had a Min Pin and I would find her in her crate napping. She loved it! I left the door open so she could come and go when she pleased.

Personally, crate-training was the greatest thing I ever did for my pup. I was totally against it when I first got Cujo. I thought it was cruel, I thought it was for people who were too lazy to take the time to properly train their animal.

…then I got to know my puppy. Crating made house-breaking SO much easier for the puppy and much safer also. I was able to keep him in the crate while I was out of apartment, and didn’t have to worry about him injuring himself or messing inside.

He learned within a week that outside was the proper place to potty, whereas without the crate, I’d had him for three weeks and could not for the life me convince him that outside was GREAT…he just wasn’t getting it.

So…I think crate-training CAN be the lazy person’s way out, but I honestly do not believe that is how the majority of pet owners use it.

No, I don’t agree with you one bit.
It’s not for lazy people, it’s for people that care about their dogs and don’t want them to get into something that can harm them.
I bet your 10 dogs are outside dogs, so there is no reason for crate training. Try bringing your dogs inside for two days and see what happens, you would want crates.

If you have inside dogs and you trust them not to destroy everything or get into something they shouldn’t, then crate training is not necessary. But if when your gone they get into everything and anything and tear stuff apart, then crate training should be an option.
I don’t put my Lab in a crate though.

I have never used a crate, However I think it depends on the owners situation. Not all owners just put a pup or dog in a crate and leave it all day. And the ones that do don’t need to own a dog. I would never put all ppl that crate in the same basket.

Crate training is for lazy people my AZZ! So, are your 10 farm dogs outside all the time? If so, I guess they wouldn’t be potty trained, would they? What would you do if an emergency occurred and you had to board those ten dogs? They would probably commit suicide if you put them in a crate. Crate training serves many purposes, and apparently, you don’t have a clue as to what they are.

Add: So did you email everyone else that didn’t agree with you, calling them names, as you did to me?

Everyone is allowed their own opinion, but in my opinion, crate training is a very affective way in teaching a dog to be house broken. It may not have been needed in your case, but for people with city dogs, especially, it is quite useful.

I think that depends entirely on why a person is crate training. I crate trained my dogs only to the extend that they are comfortable in a crate because we go to dog competition events and, at times, they must wait in a crate while I’m working with another dog. I also crated my boy for a time at night because he and his sister would harass my cats at night. Once he grew up a bit and was more regular with sleeping through the night, I put the crate away and he sleeps in my room with me. I never crated him during the day-unless he was at an event and I was with another dog and I never crated as a punishment or a way to house train. So-I think it depends on why you are crate training.
